Nintendo targets customer relationships, healthcare apps

The 2007 title Wii Fit helped restore Nintendo as a household name. Nintendo wants to reach people wherever they are, with more merchandising and an endeavor to improve health and well-being. Changing its focus from "device-based relationships" to "account-based relationships" indicates that Nintendo's about to fall in step with the more socially-minded networks of Google and Facebook, even Xbox, PlayStation and Steam. An obvious move, perhaps, but remember that Nintendo has been built around selling consoles first -- rather than games or services -- making it notoriously hesitant to venture elsewhere. "It is our intention to release some application on smart devices this year that is capable of attracting consumer attention and communicating the value of our entertainment offerings," said company president Satoru Iwata at the January 29 quarterly meeting.
