Report: Wii U reverses power consumption trend

Nintendo's Wii U might have less processing power, but it uses less energy too. Nintendo's Wii U might not win a fight on processing power alone, but it'll save money when it comes to quarterly bills, according to the US National Resources Defense Council's report on the latest round of consoles. The NRDC tested the Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One as well as their controllers, cameras and sensors, measuring their power usage when on standby mode, streaming video or TV, and running games. In total, the Wii U's estimated consumption of 37 kilowatt hours per year is fractional in comparison to the PlayStation 4's rating of 181 kWh/y and the Xbox One's of between 210 and 289 kWh/y. And when left on standby -- plugged in but not switched on -- the Wii U beats not just the PS4 and Xbox One, but each manufacturer's previous console too, even including the Wii.
