World Video Game Hall of Fame finalists: from 'Angry Birds' to 'Zelda'

Finalists for the inaugural Video Game Hall of Fame at The StrongFifteen finalists for the World Video Game Hall of Fame's first induction encompass three decades of cultural influence and innovation, with an exhibit at the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, awaiting its winning titles. Though members of the public are invited to vote in an online poll, the inaugural inductees are to be chosen by an international selection committee composed of academics, journalists and other experts on video game history and cultural impact, with a June 4 announcement forthcoming. "Pong" and "The Oregon Trail" vie for the status as the nominee lists' most veteran titles, the elementary tennis sim having been released as an arcade machine in 1972, while historical adventure "The Oregon Trail" saw commercial release in 1974 -- but an earlier educational version was first circulated in '71. "Pac-Man" (1980) is another classic arcade title adopted by the Adam Sandler movie, and has recently been resurrected as the universally praised "Pac-Man Championship Edition" and its "DX" successor, proving the old formula's lasting appeal.
